The first of them has already been discussed at length, but to reiterate it: What a theory implicitly assumes is often more essential than what it explicitly claims. The theoretical assumptions underlying a given theory, the models of sociology implemented in its concepts and propositions, are of crucial significance. They constitute the tap roots of theoretical activity. The way out of the theoretical crisis must start here, by grasping the roots directly. Therefore, the focus of my reappraisal and reinterpretation will rest on the meta-theoretical level of general assumptions, and not at the substantive level of theoretical formulations.

The reappraisal and reinterpretation of sociology that is attempted in this book is guided by two basic beliefs, which must be disclosed at the outset.

Such an image of society presupposes—inter alia—some form of a holistic or organismic standpoint (ontological claim of collectivism), as well as some version of antireductionist research strategy (the methodological view of social laws as distinct from psychological propositions, and not derivable from the latter). At the same time the structural-functional theory entails, or at least supports, certain passivistic, apologetic attitudes justifying the status quo (the conservative ideological implication), as well as certain laissez-faire, antiinterventionist policies (political implications).
