Ignatius, always generous in works of charity, did not even have enough money for his journey to the Caucasus and had to borrow cash from a friendly layman. For four years he struggled as best he could with his arduous episcopal duties, but the task exceeded his strength. In 1861 he resigned. Ignatius was allowed to retire to the small and secluded Nikolo-Babaevsky Monastery in the province of Kostroma, and here he died on 30 April 1867, in the solitude for which he had longed from his youth. He was glorified as a saint by the Russian Church in 1988, and is commemorated on the day of his death.

His period of service at St. Petersburg finally came to an end in 1857, when he was appointed Bishop of the Caucasus and the Black Sea. This was a vast diocese, founded not long before, and still not properly organized; for example, Ignatius found on his arrival that there was no episcopal residence. It seems a puzzling and even cruel assignment for someone in such precarious health. It is to be feared that one of the reasons for his appointment was envy; there were many who resented his spiritual influence in the capital and wished him out of the way.
