I was still pretty restricted with my in-laws around. Juan had tried to stop me from spending time even with them. I had no money and had to beg for food from my brother-in-law. It was the most humiliating experience of my life, having to ask his family for money for groceries. To top it off, his brother was always trying to hit on me. My friends brought me stuff. They sensed what was going on even though I still wasn't ready to talk. On Wednesday, August 2, my mother-in-law, Madeline, and my niece, Lori, left to go to a village in the mountains where many of the relatives lived.
