However, the cognitive processes that enable learners to solve problems are the construction of problem schemas (Chapter 15), analogical reasoning (Chapter 16), causal reasoning (Chapter 17), and argumentation (Chapter 20).
It is the quality of their conceptual models that most inﬂuences the ease and accuracy with which the problem can be solved (Hayes & Simon, 1976). Those conceptual models, also known as problem schemas (see Chapter 15 for a description of problem schemas), are mental representations of the pattern of information that is represented in the problem (Riley & Greeno, 1988).
