Fostering a critical self-awareness among students of the fact that their own views are by definition filtered or biased will help them put themselves in their interlocutors’ shoes and will help them understand, express and bridge the communicative divergences between the parties without resorting to simplified stereotypes that might jeopardize the communication process.

Each of the actors is a participant in a socio-cultural event and the partners work together as a team; the company is a ‘family’, in a manner of speaking, where the behaviour of each member affects the other members, and thus harmony and negotiation are highly prized. The role of the businessman/woman is thus both social and professional. These roles are played out through communication strategies such as acquiescence and indirectness. In more individualist societies, however, the aim of partners in a negotiation tends to be more immediate, to reach an agreement or settlement quickly, without the need to create a more encompassing relationship (this may or may not happen, but is not an intrinsic part of the negotiating process).
