Mothers who wished to abandon babies they could not afford would simply leave them at a baby farm and disappear. “In this way, baby farmers often served as unwilling agents in the process of abandonment” (p. 139). The economic dislocations caused by the Civil War and Reconstruction, plus the South’s post-bellum industrialization, produced suffering and poverty, resulting in a marked increase in the number of infant abandonments and homicides (Green, 1999).
