When she turned to drugs and alcohol as an adolescent, she had hidden it from them. She had smoked cigarettes for 12 years and she indicated that her parents still do not know. To date, she does not share her private life with them. Wendy had never seen her dad hit her mom. At the age of 18, Wendy became engaged. The engagement lasted for six years, and then broke up. A man she was living with prior to Doug became physically violent to her one day. She subsequently left him and was never involved with him again.

He has had a few jobs but largely has been unemployed for most of his adult life. Currently, he is unemployed. Doug had been a drug addict and alcoholic in his early adult life. He has not engaged in any form of substance abuse for the last three years. Doug came from a Catholic family. He was the oldest of seven children. He described the relationship between his parents as poor. He felt that he did not have good parents. He said they were not very loving and caring. Doug claimed that he had been hit a lot by his mother while growing up.

Once she found a place, he left town and returned to his best friend's residence. Kathy lived in Michigan for six months (October 1983 to January 1984). She kept in contact with Ronald and would often visit him on the weekends. Because they were getting along much better, Ronald asked her to move to the town where he was living. He wanted to try the relationship again. She agreed, and in February she moved. She found a place of her own and started working as a research assistant at a major university.
