CHAPTER 2 Pat’s story INTRODUCTION Pat had been a nurse for many years and was working as an experienced renal nurse when she was diagnosed with kidney failure. Within two years of her diagnosis, she needed dialysis. She continued to work as a nurse up to and during the time of her dialysis. This was followed just under two years later by a kidney transplant. Shortly after her transplant, she experienced serious heart problems that led to heart surgery.

I hope that I would have been equally taken aback even if I had not experienced brain injury. But I think it is a powerful example of the stigmatising attitudes associated not only with neurological damage but also with any serious illness. I think the experience, though surprising, was useful as a way of sensitising me to stigmatising language and attitudes regarding illness, and thus has had an impact on my work.
