Rather than seeing church as ceremony or as the center for proclaiming the Word, the Anabaptists started to live church as a community of committed believers.

Gathering all the stones together in one place does not make a building, nor does getting all the parts together make a car. Some kind of purposeful assembly must occur before the one can become the other. In the same way, there is an enormous difference between a collection of believers and a church. Getting believers all together in one place for an hour once a week does not make a church. Church is more than a gathering of believers. It is a community. As such, some kind of assembly is required.

To discover that required some reflection and study because we typically assume a common agreement and do not often try to articulate our style of being church. What we discovered is that an authentic Anabaptist-Mennonite understanding of church is communicated more by experience and modeling than by spelling it out. In other words, it is more caught than taught. We needed to uncover the key characteristics of our identitya unique understanding of being church togetherwhich is at the core of who we are but has seldom been systematically defined or taught.
