Each one experienced the new country and his or her new life in different ways. And each one adopted different ways of being. These immigrants had a unique challenge and opportunity: coming from diverse countries, they had to regroup themselves into a cohesive whole. They had to find sufficient commonalties to share and to want to recreate to be able to come together. At the same time, they had the opportunity to recreate themselves: their dream of becoming was now possible. All those potential writers, poets, musicians, doctors, engineers, scientists, and artists had an opportunity for self-creation.
Brenner herself was never indifferent or marginal to the Jewish community, and felt proud of its development. But her early testimony un-self-consciously shows that a Jew-qua-Jew would have trouble accommodating in Mexico. For her, a Jew-qua-person-if such an abstraction exists-could easily merge with the population at large: if one was "not primarily a Jew," then life in Mexico could be beautiful. She truly loved the country and was neither puzzled nor repelled by the latent hostility to Jews she inadvertently portrayed: "One may grow symmetrically," she wrote.
Furthermore, however debilitating their first experiences, the immigrants managed to overcome formlessness and use the possibilities and abilities they had to build their own social milieu.
