An often requested resource is ‘more confidence’. Process First, ask a few simple Clean Language questions to explore ‘confidence’ with the client (see the strategy ‘Noticing and paying attention to metaphors’ on p. 232). Once you have a good description (and maybe started to evoke the feeling in the client, from their concentration on it), ask a question to find a location for the confidence – all feelings have a physical location somewhere in the body.

These hormones are associated with what has been termed the ‘stress response’. When stressed, individuals are likely to experience unhelpful emotions such as anxiety or anger and this breathing exercise helps them manage and gain control over such feelings. It trains the client to breathe in a way that takes the edge off negative feelings and is not noticeable to others. It can therefore be used even when the client is engaged in conversation, for example while they are listening to what the other person is saying.

Ask the client what they will do to celebrate once they achieve their goal. And who will they celebrate with – alone, with friends or family, with you as their coach? Do remember that the coaching relationship may be the only place where the client feels they can acknowledge their successes in this way without judgement by others.
